RAINFOREST SEAL: Why get certified?

To associate is the best way to face troubles in today’s world, and that is why Flores del Lago has been working alongside others 96 companies of the flower-grower sector, since more than eight years, in pursuance of strengthen their relationships and improve their competitiveness. 

GEFFA is the name given to this group which was created to provide the companies with activities designed to enhance their capacities, for instance; the setting of training spaces, as well as bring them advisory on group purchasing and helping them to solve technical issues. Believing things only happen to just one company is a less efficient way of thought, therefore sharing and solving problems as a group allow its members to face the same technical, operational, administrative and commercial issues in a more effective way.

One of the first actions undertaken by GEFFA was to acquire the Rainforest certification. After a long evaluation, it was considered to be the most favorable alternative for the group. The Rainforest seal has a good positioning, in consequence; implies a great market opportunity, not only for Flores del Lago, but to the entire GEFFA. This seal will allow GEFFA to access different markets such as USA and Europe. On the other hand, it also raises the conscious among the different producers of the importance to take care of the environment. Working under this environmental rules means sensitize the workforce on the environmental and social topics related to it. This is a challenge that long term will permit GEFFA to be self-sufficient.

The acquisition of the seal was possible thanks an economical effort made by the flower-grower sector (more than 30 farms and sellers) and was also possible thanks to the government’s support, through the Antioquia’s agriculture secretary (120 million) and FENALCO (Federación Nacional de Comerciantes). This certificate was a first step that needed to be walked in order to live under this rule that benefits an entire sector and ultimate the community en general.
